reel movies

I don't usually like reading Glamour but in attempts to find this one article for class (yes class) I came across these mini movies that big stars like Demi Moore and Courtney Cox have collaborated and directed.  The idea is that they are based on the reader's stories that are sent in over the months.  I like the 'Monday Before Thanksgiving' because Laura Dern is in it too!

taking facebook out of love

It's become so common that a guy asks if a girl is on facebook rather than asking for her phone number.  I mean don't get me wrong I'm all up for new forms of communication but this could become a tragedy.  With a click that initial interest can dissipate as you go through photos and comments that leave you questioning if that was the same person you met the other night. Furthermore, unless you are sending msgs back and forth, the communication doesn't have much room to evolve. Plus I thought that was what msn was for.  So I have decided to block all my photos and wall to individuals who insist on making a fb connection.  Maybe this will get them off the couch and force them to dial a number and if they don't, maybe that's a good sign.

love bug

I think I have my first pest problem but it's not as gross as I thought it would be.  They are called silverfish and are mighty fast.  So I discovered this everytime I walk into the kitchen and I turn on the lights.  There are one or two that suddenly run back under the fridge and hide.  So I decided to do a lil more research and found this which made these bugs a lil bit cuter.
"The reproduction of silverfish is preceded by a 'love dance', involving three phases, which may last over half an hour (DAMN). In the first phase, the male and female stand face to face, their trembling antennae touching, then repeatedly back off and return to this position.  In the second phase the male runs away and the female chases him. In the third phase the male and female stand side by side and head-to-tail, with the male vibrating his tail against the female. Finally the male lays a spermatophore, a sperm capsule covered in gossamer, which the female takes into her body via her ovipositor to fertilize the eggs she will lay later on."

7 times over!

Talk about one for the books! We often complain that Toronto is a boring city, seven locations, five cab rides, three pairs of heels, and one adventure would sure make a great story. My weekend started off with revealing to my father that his so called ticket to Dallas was purchased vice versa (Dallas to Toronto, Toronto to Dallas). After a mad dash to the airport we found out that he could only get on the right plane for a total cost of $2000!!! No kidding! So of course we refused and drove home only to find out my cousin had purchased my dad a whole new ticket (wasted another ridiculous amount of money) and he would leave Saturday morning! Waking up at 4am was no fun but sleeping in after made up for it and the fact that I later got to see my karate kids!! I bought a huge sushi dinner (it's hard to find good sushi in waterloo) and I went home to get ready. Once the girls arrived we headed down to our first ever charity event for the United Way at 1 King St. (poshy indeed!) We hung out for a bit but to be honest we got a little bored of the crowd and entertainment so once we left at around 10:30 we somehow managed to not settle on any one place and cab around Toronto's nightlife. We pretty much covered King and College west to finally settle at Garden for some yummy Chinese food. You'd think it was a long night but we were all nicely tucked in by 2:30 eager for breakfast. I will admit that I had a little bit more expectations for the charity event but I can honestly say that it had been a while since I had so much fun! Thank you girls! xoxo

social justice lady to the rescue

A friend recommended I should go as Social Justice Girl next year for Halloween! Great idea! now just come up with the actual costume..
Today I had my first presentation on a social justice issue: child poverty.  It has taken us centuries to finally talk about it and realize how deep the problem really is. I just hope it doesn't take another century to actually do something about it?
Nonetheless while researching I came across some startling facts and believe it or not London has taken the first step in eradicating child poverty after a recent study showed 4 in 10 children were living in poverty in the city.  Great link worth checking out.

what's a girl gotta do?!?

I played by the rules and dropped all the right hints.  So why can't this guy just ask me out to coffee? Is it so hard for the male specie to summon up courage and just ask a girl out??!? I mean come on! If I've been talking to you almost every day and putting myself out there, I am not going to say NO!
maybe it's safe to assume 'he's just not that into me'....
really though? he started it! errrrr

October 28, 2008

oh my ears!!!

Tonight I attended my first ever owner's condo meeting and I must say that I am OFFICIALLY living in a senior's retirement home.  I was younger than some of these people's great grandchildren and as soon as I pointed out that I was a student, they mocked me through every statement made by saying 'These students are speeding around the property and these students are this and that'. Jeeze.  It didn't make it easier when someone actually asked me what I was studying and I said 'health studies and gerontology'.  I kid you not there was not a noise made in that room and all eyes were on me.  Then I began thinking that we call children kids, but yet it's uncomfortable to refer to the senior generation in any way.  The best was when my upstairs neighbours (about 70) came up to me and said 'Do we make a lot of noise?' which I proceeded to say 'No not at all' and I kid you not she looked at her husband and said, 'Bill here likes to exercise or at least pretend and let's just say sometimes things get a little crazy (giggle)'.  OH! Nightmares to come for years!!!
Note that the meeting had to end a little earlier because no one and I mean no one wanted to miss the Dancing With The Stars finale! WOW!

night in?!

Before moving I have to admit I was a little worried about the excessive partying that may occur with an apartment to myself and a university city under my feet! Boy was I ever wrong!
Don't get me wrong I love living alone but with great freedom came a rather small appetite for going all out.  In fact, this evening I have opted to sit on my couch with a waffle and ice cream (shhh! let's not say anything to the trainer) and High School Musical (yes you read right).
Everyone's got a secret and I just told you mine :)

October 23, 2008

wtf?!?

I haven't been keeping up as closely as I'd like with the Presidential campaign happening in the south.  However, I did come across this clip which just threw me over the edge.  Don't get me wrong, I was angry but quickly laughing my butt off when I realized that here is yet another Republican making a lasting impression. COME ON!!! WTF IS GOING THROUGH YOUR HEAD?!?!?

October 21, 2008

what happened?

I'm not sure how to exactly write this entry.  In fact, I'm not sure I want to write it at all.
So maybe tune in in a couple of days when this cloud has passed.

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest should be a national holiday!! After a bumming around Saturday, the karate gang came up for their first Waterloo visit.  With no time to waste, we got ready and headed to the rec center for a huge party! An arena big party!! Although we got there by 8, within an hour the place was packed and drinks were in hand while sausages were passed around, and I'm talking about hot dogs.  I must admit that all my complaining about going to all these places and being the oldest one was heard because the average age seemed to be around 26 and the male to female ratio was about 4 to 1.  The dancing begun and who knew the polka and chicken dance would be such a success.  By one I thought my feet were about to fall off but I managed to walk over to the Spurr and end the night with the greasiest fries and really really bad karaoke.
It was truly one of those nights that everyone enjoyed themselves and although I had an amazing time with the group, the highlight had to be when I turned around and I spotted my BANKER!! Mr. Teller was standing in a nice collar shirt with a grey zip up looking as fine as ever. It was truly a take my breath away moment making me think maybe I should do something about it... hmmmmm how do you ask a teller out in a creative way?!?
ps. Shout outs to the married couple who made every guy who talked to me feel extremely awkward. I can always count on you guys for a positive reinforcement :) xoxo

single in the loo???

Could it be that I'm the only single girl left in waterloo?!? I mean come on!! Everywhere I look there are couples all around me. They even come together to the doctor's office. Today while waiting to see the doctor because of my never ending cold I saw three boyfriends accompany their girlfriends to see the doctor (somebody didn't use a condom last night)!
So how does one find a single guy in the loo!? I'll take any suggestions.

it's the spanish

I watched 'Vicky, Christina, Barcelona' tonight and unless you haven't walked in the streets of Spain and seen a lovers quarrel, the movie may not be as interesting.  However, I loved every scene of it not only because of the familiarity in the scenes filmed, it shows love outside of the boundaries societies often place.  Plus, it's a Woody Allen film that brings something new to the table yet has its quirky conversations.
It was a pretty fun filled weekend with one crazy sleep over, one karaoke bar, a saturday market, and a surprise visit from the parents.  Then today I got to go on a class trip to the Waterloo Public Health Department and met some of the big names there.  I wonder how my first presentation at a place like this will feel like?!?

i have a crush on my banker

What up with all these black flies?! I literally have to kill a handful every day, and the ones I miss chose to die in the most random places.  On top of that I have wasps and crickets crawling and flying about.  Sometimes I feel like I'm camping.
My bestest is here for the weekend and tomorrow we get to do some exploring.  I think we'll start of the day at the market and then go find me some speakers for my computer.
Fun times!
ps. I have a crush on my banker who drives a red car (I'm not stalking).  How do I subtly ask him if he's interested in going out sometime?
lol who am I kidding.

sniffles and achoos

I'm sick and my mommy isn't here to make me soup!! If this is growing up then it SUCKS cause I could do with some yummy soup right now and a little loving.  Instead I had some nasty noodles and a glass of orange juice.
This sucks!!!

Is home really where the heart is??

Masters happened and with it came the crazy reading lists and ten assignments a week.  So just when I handed in the last of the assignments and thought I could breath I come home to a full inbox of new assignments and research work.  All in all though I can't complain.  In fact, I like it!
What I don't like was the surprise awaiting me this weekend when I got home.  I have officially been completely moved out of my own house!! What kills me is how carefully executed it was done.  I get home on Thursday and attempt to surprise my parents because they were expecting me a day later.  I walk in and find more boxes and my computer table gone.  I inquire about the sudden disappearance of the table and I get the answer 'Oh! your dad was trying to fix it and it broke so we just threw it out!" Alright, understandable but a lil coincidental wouldn't you say??
Saturday morning I wake up to my mom making noises as she's leaving the house at 9am.  A couple of hours later she comes back and explains how she saw this amazing bed at this antique market and she bought it for me (yeah right).  It just so happens that the bed is a queen size and comes with a side and curtains.  Sunday morning as I'm packing up my mom says to me "why don't you take this bed with you too??" I ask her how she exactly proposes I do that.  She simply answers 'Well just put it in your car and take it with you'.  Now at this point I'm becoming enraged with this sudden change of plans.  So enraged that I decide to become a rebel and refuse to take my bed and don't place my remaining belonging into the boxes.
Monday night I call home and my dad picks up and says "Oh hunnie you'll love your new room.  We got RIDE of all the furniture and the extra JUNK you had! We REPAINTED that nasty pink to a nice shade of yellow and put up the beautiful curtains!!!"  I swear that after that sentence was uttered I didn't hear anything else and just wanted to crawl in a corner and bawl.  For your information that nasty pink was my first attempt at home renovation and that junk was my collection of photos and memories over the years!
But I think it hit me hardest when I realized that this wasn't an attempt at a dream room for ME but rather the creation of a GUEST ROOM!!!!
It's safe to say that I am now a guest in my own house! I cannot wait for the next blow...

who knew

This weekend while trying on my brand new sweater, I found it a little more snug then I recall when I bought it.  I automatically went to panic mode and knew I had to go to the gym as of monday.  Who knew the universities brand new gym consisted of a room with five ellipticals.  Worst part was the average age of the gym was still five years younger than mine.  Later that night on my way home from Office Depot I noticed a brand new gym beside my house.  I decided to check it out and today and I was surprised since it is an all women's club and not that expensive at all (around $35 a month).  I signed up and was advised to come back later to try the new dance crave class.
So I did and I found myself standing in a room with women whose average age was not at least twenty more than mine.  But I gotta say, I've never had so much fun dancing to 'Sexual Healing' and 'Sexy Money Maker'.  There were women who were older than my grandmother who could move their hips better than I can ever imagine doing so.  Anyways, one hour of fun resulted in me drenched and excited for the many more classes to come.

Internet hell

So much for keeping my blog updated.  What does one have to do to get some internet??! I spent all of Thursday at home on the phone waiting for the internet dude to show up.  At around four I was losing it and after spending yet another hour on the phone being shafted from department to department, I threw the towel in and left the house.
After having dinner with my friend at the Huether's Hotel (not to be mistaken with Hooters lol) I headed back home to watch the premier of 'So You Think You Can Dance'.  While driving home I realized I had forgotten to email the gallery on some work I was doing for them so I picked up the laptop and headed over to William's Pub for a mango strawberry smoothie and FREE internet!!
On my way back home I noticed this motorcycle behind me.  A Kawasaki R6 to be exact (for those who know me, you know that this bike is it!)  I decided to scope out the driver but when I missed the elevator I figured we'd eventually meet.  Little did I know that Mr. Motorcycle lives two doors away from me.  I basically squeaked a 'hello' and flew to my door.  Now I know I mentioned that my apartment was 99% seniors, but in the last two days I've seen three attractive individuals on my floor alone... things are getting a little more interesting ...

the beginning

With a new adventure comes a new blog which I actually promise to keep updated.  For those who don't know, in two days I will turn 24 and start my new life as a Masters student at the University of Waterloo.  I have to admit that I was a bit hesitant moving to a small city, but Waterloo provides the tranquility of a small town and the modernity (is that even a word?) of a big city.  This past week I moved to an apartment north east of the city and I have to admit the building consists of 90% seniors and 10% students and young couples.  I don't mind it at all. In fact, it provides a more homey feeling seeing the seniors smiling faces everyday in the elevator and having that friendly conversation.
So far I have met the other people within the program (about ten of us) and I can't complain. Note that I am the only one coming from Toronto.  The campus is beautiful and my faculty is located in a new posh building just north of campus.  With one week gone I can say that I'm happy with the decisions that I have made that have lead me to this path.  A new life with a new beginning.  Can't wait...
